The Fragrance of a Rose

I found a pad of decorative tags from K & Co, and decided to use one for this card. It had a combination of wording, newsprint, and stitching in the design.  I started with a beige card base and added a layer of light teal cardstock that I stamped with CC043 Cover-a-Card Roses from Impression Obsession, using Brilliance Beige ink.  I used the ends of the decorative tag and layered them on dark brown cardstock that I cut out using Spellbinders’ Grand Label 4.  I stamped IO’s C4486 Peony in raspberry ink onto the tag ends.  I felt kind of silly because when I looked at this stamp I must not have looked close enough because I really thought it was a rose.  Oh well, it still looked nice.

For the sentiment I used C1380 Fragrance, also from Impression Obsession.  I stamped it in raspberry on cream cardstock, cut it out with Spellbinders’ Labels 18, and sponged the edges with Linen Distress Ink.  I layered this on a piece of beige cardstock, cut out with Spellbinders Labels 9 and sponged with dark brown Stazon ink.  I added this to the card with foam tape.

For embellishment I added some pink and beige pearls and teal paper roses that I purchased at Michael’s.  Then I used some seam binding that I dyed and wrapped it around the card and added a bow.

At the Our Daily Bread Designs Blog the Stamping In Time: On Assignment Challenge (SNTODBD39) we are to use something recycled.  Since I work at a school and I have children in school, we have a large box with extra school supplies.  I was looking through the box and spotted an old pink poly two-pocket folder that was fairly thin and I thought the color would be pretty for a flower.  I had wanted to play with my new sets of stamps, Sweet William and Sweet William Small, from Our Daily Bread Designs and was suddenly inspired to use the folder with the stamps.

I stamped the flowers with dark brown Stazon ink on the folder and cut them out with the Spellbinder Blossom Three dies.  I did some layering but really wasn’t pleased with how it looked.  Also, even though Stazon is permanent ink, it seemed to still come off a bit.  I decided to heat set it and commented to one of my friends that I better be careful not to melt it.  She responded by telling me to see what happened if I did melt the ends of the petals a bit.  Of course, I had to try.  I cut between the petals and applied heat to the ends of the petals, one at a time.  They started to warp and curl up on the ends.  Then I heated the center and pressed down with a large tip stylus.  I loved the look so I made three different sizes and layered them.  For the centers I added some beautiful buttons I found this last weekend.

I decided to make this quite large (8” x 8”) because I wanted to give the flowers plenty of room.  I also thought it might be nice to frame it.  I added some pleated ribbon to the left side and some wonderful pearl embellishments.  The green pearls and pink flower pearls around the sentiment are Basic Grey.  The sentiment is from ODBD’s Happy Birthday set.  I stamped it in brown and cut it out using Joy! Crafts’ Oval Multi Frame Die and layered it on brown, cut out using Spellbinders Label 20.

Sparkle N Sprinkle has introduced another new set called Fancy Butterflies and I love it.  I am partial to butterflies, anyhow, but these are so pretty and have wonderful sentiments to go with them.  What makes them absolutely irresistible is they coordinate with the new Spellbinder's Nested Butterflies 2 Dies and Butterflies Circles Dies.  Well, let’s get to what you are waiting for, the card.

The card layout is referred to as a Joy Fold Card and I love the way it opens.  It has two different flaps that open to reveal the inside which allows for a lot of different layers, something I really enjoy.   

For the top layer you can see the new Fancy Butterfly image.  I embossed it and added glitter on clear embossable acetate.  You can see how to do this in the Tips and Techniques section of the SNS website here.  I layered this on brown cardstock and embossed acetate, cut out with one of the new Nested Butterflies.  I love how the cut out swirls enhance the butterfly image.

The flower on the left corner holds the first flap shut but when you open it you can see the beautiful decorative paper I used.

When you open the second flap, it reveals the layered sentiment, Beautiful Day, inside the Circle Frame.  You can see detailed instructions how to make this card on the SNS website here.

Sending Happy Thoughts

Last weekend I made a trip to my friend, Cheryl’s, and we did a lot of shopping.  I purchased a new piece of Basic Grey cardstock called Euphoria.  It was a mix of beautiful flowers and reminded me of a garden of wild flowers.  This was perfect to make my card to introduce one of the new sets from Sparkle N Sprinkle called Thoughtful Frames.  This set is a combination of decorative frames and some wonderful sentiments.  What is really great is they coordinate with Spellbinders’ square and oval nestabilities.

For the front of my card I used a new doily die and cut it out of my beautiful “garden” paper.  I layered it on a raspberry card base, cut out with a Spellbinders’ circle die. 

The sentiment, Single Flower, is embossed, using Amethyst Spray embossing powder from SNS, and layered on raspberry cardstock.  Both were cut out with Spellbinder Dies.  I added SNS’ Bubble Gum glitter around the edge of the sentiment with a glue pen and added a single sticker flower for embellishment.

Inside the card I used one of the new frames from the set, called Flourish Oval Frame.  It is stamped with Rasberry ink and heat embossed with Sparkle embossing powder and the sentiment, Thoughts Set, is embossed with Amethyst Spray.  I layered it on a light blue punched border  and added ribbon and a bow that was already dyed light pink and I added some of the raspberry ink to it.  This is a great way to have your ribbon coordinate with your card.

Fight The Good Fight

Our Daily Bread Designs Shining The Light Challenge (ODBDSLC68) this week is an inspiration challenge.  You are to create a card inspired by a WORD or the ENTIRE PHRASE "You're a grand old flag, you're a high flying flag."  Though there were so many ideas that came to mind, I could not resist using ODBD’s new stamp, Old Flag Background.

I decided to really challenge myself by making a distressed tag.  I do not make very many tags and I also do not do a lot of paper tearing or collaging so this took a little more work on my part.  I actually created the cream tag base by cutting just the top with a die by rolling it only part way through my Big Shot.  Then I trimmed the edges, lined it up with the bottom of the die, and barely running this into the machine.  I embossed some script on the tag, distressed the edges, and then added Tea Dye and Fired Brick Distress Inks.  I ran some dark blue cardstock through an embossing folder to add a star design, tore the edges, and added Tea Dye Distress Ink.  I layered it on the tag.

I stamped the Old Flag Background image with Versamark ink on cream cardstock and heat embossed it with sparkly bronze embossing powder.  I colored it with watercolors and then tore off the section I wanted to fit on the tag.  I scrunched it up, then layed it out and sponged and rubbed on distress ink, and added it to the tag.

The sentiment is from ODBD’s new Not Forgotten set.  I stamped and heat embossed it on cream cardstock, rounded the corners and distressed it, and sponged with distress ink.  I layered it on a blue tag that was embossed and also distressed.  I attached it with a combination of red and blue fibers.  I created a few distressed stars and added these.  I debated on adding some glitter but decided that the sparkle from the embossing powder was enough.

Here is a cute card for the House Mouse and Friends Challenge of Buttons, Bows, and Bling.  They are celebrating their 100th Challenge so go check out how you can win some wonderful prizes.  I also tried to meet some other challenges, including Mark’s Fine Papers with a challenge of Bright and Cheery/Pink, Yellow, and Green.  I found this little guy and he reminded me of all the summer sports.  Even though this card has pink on it, I still think it works pretty well for a young man.  I used layers of yellow and green cardstock on a white card base and two different decorative papers.  I wanted the center to look a bit like a ball diamond.

The image in the center is colored with Tombow markers and cut out with a square Spellbinders’ Nestie.  For embellishment I added yellow jewels on the scallops of the green layer under the image.  I ran green polka dot ribbon down the left side with a bow and layered buttons.  There are more small buttons on the top and bottom of the card and two green brads in the corners on the right side.  I also added a green metal star and a dragonfly that I colored with alcohol ink.

I love this new Hydrangea image from Our Daily Bread Designs.  This is one of my favorite summer flowers.  The variation of colors in these flowers always amazes me and I have wanted one of these plants for a long time.  I finally have one in my front yard and it blooms so beautifully.

I needed a card for our shoebox project at my local stamp club so I made this shaped card using Spellbinders Grand Labels Four.  I wanted to use this distressed looking pink paper so I used a white card base and layered it on the front.  Our shoebox theme was “pocket” so I cut a size smaller die from white cardstock and used just the end to create the pocket at the bottom.  I embossed it with an embossing folder and did not use adhesive along the top edge so the message tag could be tucked inside.  It is made using a sentiment from ODBD Large Scrapbook Words.  I stamped it in rose ink and layered it on a black label cut out with a die.

The Hydrangea image was stamped and heat embossed three times in white on lilac colored cardstock.  Then I used chalk to add color and shading.  I cut these out and layered them on the top left side of the card, using foam tape to pop up the top image.  For embellishment I tied ribbon around the card at the top of the pocket and added pearls.

Simply Summer

I have been playing with my friends all weekend.  I had made this card just before I left but was so busy having fun that I almost forgot to post it.

This card is for the challenge at House Mouse & Friends with the theme of “Make a Splash” and asking to show water on the card.  I totally forgot I had this stamp and had not even used it before.  This card was very hard to make because it was also being entered in a challenge that was to be very simple and only 1 layer.  I truly felt it was unfinished because I ached to do more with it.  Hold me back!!!

I colored the image with Tombow markers.  I decided to add a little pink flocking to the “snow ball”.  I think I bought this stamp because I love to eat these.  I wanted it to look like the pink coconut but maybe not quite the same affect.  I used my scor-pal for the bottom to give it the look of a picnic tablecloth and sponged a little red ink on it.  Then I added some “stitched clouds” to the top.

Sparkle N Sprinkle "Sparkling Wintry Sensations” Blog Hop

It has been extremely hot around here so thinking about winter and Christmas was very refreshing.  I am notorious for making my Christmas cards last minute, but after seeing all the wonderful images used by the designers and their “sensational” cards, I know you will be inspired to start right now.  Get a refill on that hot chocolate and enjoy the rest of this hop.

I love to use a variety of color palettes for my Christmas cards and for my first card I decided to use black and red.  Not the usual Christmas colors.  I used Sparkle N Sprinkles’ Joy Ornament and Poinsettia Ornament, embossing with Midnight Madness Embossing Powder.  I cut them out using the coordinating Spellbinders’ Heirloom Ornaments dies.

I used two different sentiment stamps, Rejoice in the center of the Poinsettia Ornament and Good Will & Happiness.

My second card is a tri-fold card.  I used the stamps Joy Ornament and Striped Ornament, and, once again, I cut them out with the Spellbinders’ Heirloom Ornament dies.  I used Silver, White, and Sparkle embossing powders and Impulsive Purple Glitter on the ornaments.

The Striped Ornament is created using Clear Embossable Acetate.

 On the inside of the card I used the Joy of Christmas sentiment.  Go here to learn how to make this card.

SNTODBD38 So Loved

This week Our Daily Bread Designs Stamping Time:  On Assignment Challenge was Christmas cards.  It was hard for me to think Christmas when it was over 100° outside.  Then I decided to look through some of my paper and found a piece that inspired me.

I layered dark blue and kacky on a white square card base.  Then I added a layer of white with the sides punched with a border punch.  On top of this I added more dark blue and then a piece of this gorgeous paper.  The candles remind me that God is the Light of the World and He gave His Son because He loved us so much.  To me that is what Christmas is all about.

The sentiment is from Our Daily Bread Designs' new set, Large Scrapbook Words.  I stamped the sentiment in Adirondack Denim Blue ink on a piece of vellum.  I sponged a little blue around the edges and layered it on white rectangle.  I added this to a dark blue tag, cut with one of Spellbinders' Fancy Tags 2.  I used an older Spellbinders' snowflake die, along with a Martha Stewart punch, to add two snowflakes around the sentiment.

Due to either blogger or my computer being difficult, I missed the deadline to enter ODBD’s challenge but they will have a new and exciting one starting tomorrow.  Now I am in the mood for Christmas.  This might be the earliest I started my Christmas cards.

The Voice of The Sea

Impression Obsession has a challenge of “Hello.”  I had to do a lot of thinking for this one.  As I looked through my stamps, I found this wonderful lighthouse and I pictured it calling out with its light to ships out at sea.  It was like it was saying hello to them and guiding them home.  This stamp is called Hatteras with Boat (F1175) and the sentiment is called Voice Square (B53850

I used two different Cuttlebug embossing folders on this card, a shell one on the dark blue background and swirls on the light blue strip.  The sea shell border above and below the light blue strip was created using a Martha Stewart border punch.

The image and the sentiment were stamped with Adirondek Denim dye ink and they were cut out using Spellbinder dies.  For embellishments I added two strips of sparkly ric rak ribbon and 3 buttons.  The larger button kind of reminded me of a life preserver.

This card reminds me of summer vacations at the beach.  The girls and I loved to walk on the beach and pick up shells.  We would always come home sunburned with a bucket of shells, and sand everywhere.

Sweet Summer

I haven’t felt really great lately.  Not sure if it is the hot weather or I am just under the weather.  I did have a really fun weekend.  My friend, Cheryl, was passing through and stopped overnight.  We ate, we played, and we shopped.  We always have so much fun when we get together.  This weekend a group of us are going to her house on Friday, then on the Winston Salem, NC for a stamp convention.  More fun!!  Hope I feel better by then.

I did spend some time stamping yesterday and today.  Today’s card is based off of a lot challenge themes.  I have meant to make a card with a summer look since there have been a lot of challenges asking for this.  I thought about what summer was all about to my family.  Right now it is very hot so I thought about the color red.  It is a time to go to the beach or pool so I used a designer paper with wavy stripes.  This could also represent the hot winds.  When we are hot we like something cold, like ice cream.  There were several food related challenges, so this fit in well.  It wouldn’t be summer without flowers and butterflies so I had to add these.

This card is a combination of reds, pinks, and neutrals (especially white and brown).  I used a white card base and added a layer of dark red.  Then I added a deep pink layer that I embossed with an embossing folder with butterflies and swirls.  The swirls have a stitched look to them.  I sponged the edge of this layer with red ink and sponged white ink over the embossing.  Then I added three background mats cut out with dies.

I had this beautiful designer paper with flowers and sparkly polka dot leaves and strawberries.  I cut this with a Spellbinder scalloped circle, layered it on a slightly larger dark red scalloped circle, and put it on the right side of the card.  On the left I added a tag I cut out from the wavy striped paper using a Sizzix die.  I used an embossing folder to add the words “Just as sweet as can be!” and sponged the edges and embossing with red ink.  I added some of my dyed seam binding to the top of the tag.  For the image I used a Magnolia stamp of adorable Tilda eating ice cream, colored her with markers, and cut her out with a Spellbinder scalloped circle die.  I layered this on a scalloped square of dark red, also cut out with a Spellbinder die.

I used a glitter pen to color the image's wings and add hi-lites to the card, including the embossed wording and butterflies.  I also used it to add stitching around the tag, scalloped square, and outer edges of the card.  For embellishments I add three light pink, felt flowers with buttons for the centers.  I used some fiber to add little bows to Tilda’s braids and added a sparkly butterfly, cut out with a new die from designer cardstock.
